South’s Vaughan Coveny soared but ultimately could not find the back of the net against Oakleigh Cannons at Bob Jane Stadium last week.

The match, which South dominated for 90 minutes, finished 0-0 and did little to consolidate either side’s position on the Victorian Premier League table.

Yesterday, South Melbourne extended their unbeaten streak to eight games with a 2-0 defeat of Altona. Gianni De Nittis scored the first goal in the first half and the second goal was an Altona own-goal.

The match was Brazilian ex-patriot Fernando De Moraes’ 100th for South a milestone for which the fans showed their appreciation by holding up a large banner in his native Portuguese congratulating ‘Nando’ for making century game for South.

Heidelberg United compounded Preston’s wows by inflicting a 7-0 drubbing on their VPL rivals – not a pretty sight.

On Saturday Oakleigh scored an impressive 2-1 win away to Green Gully, with Gerry Karpet scoring both Cannon’s goals.

Cannon’s striker Ricky Diaco, who missed the game with a torn groin, told NKEE “It shows our fantastic depth.

We had a few players missing but to win away at Gully is a great result. We are starting to come good.”

Diaco will hope to be back for next week’s clash against Hume City, who scored an impressive win over Richmond on Friday night. South is away to Sunshine Georgies at Chaplin Reserve on Sunday while Heidelberg face Dandenong Thunder away from home on Saturday.
