Federal MP Maria Vamvakinou will be challenged in the upcoming preselections of the ALP as the deadline closed for nominations for state and federal seats in Victoria on Thursday.

Ms Vamvakinou is the only Federal MP being challenged after the two factions of the ALP have come to a compromise.

The challenger is Andrew Richards from the ultra left splinter group The Workers First from within the Metal Workers Union.

The group unsuccessfully tried to claim six seats on a State and Federal level but was rebuffed by the mainstream left faction of the ALP of which Ms Vamvakinou comes from, and from the centre right factions.

It is suggested that because of this fallout the group is trying to take revenge against the factions.

John Pandazopoulos MP was renominated for the Labor safe seat of Dandenong and it is expected that Jenny Mikakos MP will also renominate without any challenges for the Northern Metropolitan Region. The nomination of Theo Theophanous MP remains in question but all nominations for the Senate will be decided on July 17.

Liberal MP Nick Kotsiras was renominated for the seat of Bulleen and his bid for reelection is considered safe.
