On Sunday 23 May Dr Nicholas Doumanis will launch his new book A History of Greece, which presents the story of the land and its people as a continuity from prehistoric times to our own day.

Drawing on the latest research into ancient, medieval and modern history, Nicholas Doumanis provides fresh and challenging insights into Greek history since early antiquity.

A History of Greece explores the resilience of the Greek culture and provides an insight into its interaction with other cultures throughout centuries.

Taking a transnational approach, Doumanis argues that its resilience has a great deal to do with this continual interaction.

For example, the Greeks of Homer’s day drew inspiration from Egypt and the Middle East, seizing upon these influences and transforming them into something unique.

One such thing derived from outside influences was Greece’s prose literature, which became the medium for philosophy and history. The book also sheds light on the Roman rule over Greece, and the Byzantine Empire.

Dr Doumanis is the author of the international prize-winning book, Myth and memory in the Mediterranean, on the Italian occupation of the Dodecanese, and of Italy: Inventing the nation.

He is currently working on a book about the Greeks in Anatolia and a history of the Eastern Mediterranean. He is also a Senior Lecturer in World History at the University of New South Wales.

The launch will take place at Barnet Long Room, Customs House, 31 Alfred Street, Circular Quay, Sydney at 4.00pm.Stay tuned for next week’s Neos Kosmos English Edition which will provide further insight into A History of Greece. NKEE will also interview Dr Doumanis about his inspirations and concepts behind his work.
