The Peloponnessian Confederation of NSW Inc. has announced this year’s winners of the inaugural Greek Australian and Peloponnesian of the year awards.

The message she wanted to give to younger people was to never give up.

Cancer researcher and academic Professor Vasso Apostolopoulos, was named Greek Australian of the Year, while Vicky Paranomos, a community worker and volunteer, was awarded Peloponnesian of the year.

The Consul General of Greece, Vasilios Tolios presented the awards at a gala event in Sydney on Thursday night, when the winners were announced.

The awards are part of the Greek-Peloponnesian Festival, which started on September 28 and runs until October 9.

Peloponnesian Confederation NSW committee member and festival director, Andrew Kalavritinos described the event as “fantastic”, and said Professor Apostolopoulos’ speech was particularly inspiring.

“The message she wanted to give to younger people was to never give up,” he said.
Mr Kalavritinos said it was wonderful to see Peloponnesian of the year, Vicky Paranomos, honoured for her 19 years of community service at the Children’s hospital in Sydney.

Across both categories, 11 people were nominated.
