I have always said that if I was to attend my dream dinner party it would include Oprah Winfrey and the Dalai Lama.
Well part of that my dream came true last week when my friend Megan Castran invited my husband and myself over for her traditional weekly taco night.
This one was different because it was also Megan’s birthday. Megan is a special girl who truly lives with the concept of the law of attraction. Megan met Oprah five years ago in Hawaii. She handed Oprah her business card saying, “If you are ever in Australia call me and come and have dinner with my family.”
Soon after that meeting Megan was lucky enough to get a couple of seats to an Oprah show in Chicago. After the show when Oprah was chatting with her audience Megan spoke to her again. Oprah he still had her card and it was as she said, “filed under Australia”.
Five years later, Oprah is in Australia to tape some shows and she calls my friend Megan. My husband Ross Wilson [ex-Daddy Cool & Mondo Rock] and I were excited to be invited. As we turned into Megan’s street and we were confronted by a news helicopter circling above her home while paparazzi and fans were kept at bay by security.
In that way that only a Greek can we arrived 20 minutes late. Everyone was already sitting around the tables on the poolside patio eating tacos and drinking margaritas and shots of tequila Oprah had brought with her.
There were 15 invited guests and that many again in Oprah’s film crew shooting the evening.
I instantly felt relaxed around this lady that I have admired over many years. It was as if she was instantly a friend of all of ours.
She asked us questions about Australia, our values, what our dreams are, our level of tolerance towards different ethnic groups and our attitudes towards sex. She made a point of saying how she can’t believe how friendly we are and that there is a vibrancy that resonates from us.
Megan, her husband Paul and their teenage kids Max and Zoe were the perfect host family and kept the party events flowing. Greek party singer Paris sang an audacious version of Billionaire, accompanied by Zoe Castran who blew everybody away with her beautiful voice.
Guests on the night included golfer Stuart Appleby and his wife Ashley, the shocked and surprised The Age columnist Suzanne Carbone, who was blown away by the scoop that had landed in her lap as well other close friends of the Castran family.
Oprah then announced that she is taking us all to Sydney to attend her show! So we all drank another tequila shot to her health. Ross pulled out his guitar to belt out a couple of his classic songs.
During his rendition of Eagle Rock everyone is up dancing and Oprah turns into a true Aussie, singing the lyrics out loud after the second verse. She was truly having a great time.
Pastry master Christopher Mantebello of Let Them Eat Cake, brought out the cake he had created of Uluru with Oprah sitting on top. We cut into the cake to wild cheers.
Oprah’s producers were trying to wrap it up but she was having such a ball that she had already overstayed by an hour. She ran out with cake in hand.
This unforgettable evening was not all. We were flown up to Sydney in a private Lear Jet, picked up at airport and taken to a beautiful hotel. Oprah’s generosity was astounding!
We were taken to the taping of her show and escorted in to the second row as were mentioned as the ‘taco crew from Melbourne’.
My husband, [Ross Wilson], could not make it as he was performing in the morning, but Oprah’s people called Ross and flew him up in to be part of the evening show. He warmed audience with Eagle Rock the crowd went nuts crazy, over 6000 people at the steps of the Opera House, it was amazing.
If that was not enough, Oprah gave all the audience pearls in the morning in the morning and diamonds in the afternoon. As the harbour bridge lit up with a large ‘O’ in lights, I kept reminding myself, ‘This is was not a dream.’
