Olympiakos Volou have done Olympiakos Piraeus a huge favour by springing one of the surprises of the Super League season and beating Panathinaikos 1-0 in Athens on Saturday.

The defeat for the Greens means that they have 31 points from 15 games and if Olympiakos beat bottom side Larissa on Sunday, they will go six points clear at the top of the table.

Panathinaikos, who have not been able to replicate the form that took them to the title last season, put in another disappointing performance that caused the 20,000 fans at the Olympic Stadium to boo their side. Some even made it onto the pitch to chase players and coaching staff.

The disjointed performance, which left Djibril Cisse with little to feed off will raise questions about how Portuguese coach Jesualdo Ferreira is taking to the task of reshaping the way the Greens play.

The killer blow for Ferreira and his players came in the 79th minute when a shot by Javier Ubides was parried by Alezis Tzorvas only for Vicente Monje to pounce and see his deflected follow-up find the net.

In Saturday’s other games, Ergotelis continued their recent revival with a 2-0 home win over Panserraikos. Mario Budomir in the first half and Thomas Visio in the second got the goals for the Cretans.

Ergotelis are seventh on 20 points while Panserraikos remain second from bottom on 15 points.

Kavala are in fifth on 21 points after drawing 1-1 with Atromitos at home. The visitors rescued a point in the third minute of stoppage time through Marek Saganowski after Bartholemew Ogbeche had opened the scoring on 51 minutes.

Panionios remain in the relegation zone on 15 points after a 0-0 draw with Asteras Tripolis who have just one point more but are in 10th place – an indication of how tight the Super League is this season.
