Founding member and former president of the New Democracy party, Miltiadis Evert, died at an Athens hospital on Wednesday, aged 72 years.
Evert, who had a history of heart problems, had been hospitalised at the Ippokratio Hospital in Athens since January 25.
Evert was elected a parliamentary deputy in 1974, Athens mayor in 1986 and president of New Democracy in 1993, a post he held until 1997.
He retired from politics in 2009. As mayor of Athens in 1987, Evert helped launch “Athina 9.84”, the first legally broadcasting private radio station in Greece.
Evert is survived by his wife, photographer Lisa Vanderpool, daughter of American archaeologist Eugene Vanderpool, and two daughters.
