The Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship Nicholas Kotsiras on Wednesday announced funding of $15,000 to restore the Australian Hellenic Memorial at the Shrine of Remembrance.

Mr Kotsiras said the Australian Hellenic Memorial Foundation had worked hard to establish and maintain the memorial, and it was important to remember the sacrifice and contribution made by so many who have served Australia in times of war.

“In Victoria, we are fortunate to have one of the largest Greek-speaking populations in the world. Generations of Greek Australians have contributed to all aspects of life in Victoria, including serving our country during times of war.
“In honouring the shared sacrifice of the young men and women of Greece and Australia, and other allies who fought for freedom, we acknowledge that their legacy is very much alive and with us today.

“It is important to acknowledge this contribution through monuments such as the Australian Hellenic Memorial and to ensure they remain in good condition for future generations to learn from,” Mr Kotsiras said.

Mr Kotsiras said the Victoria’s multicultural society is and will remain one of our state’s greatest assets and strengths,” said Mr Kotsiras.
