The Australian Government is urging Greek Australians within the community to make small healthy lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of some chronic diseases.
The ‘Swap it, Don’t Stop It’ campaign encourages people to make small changes throughout their day – little swaps they can make to help reduce their waistline.
Accredited Practising Dietitian Maria Andonopoulos says that the “campaign offers practical advice and makes sense for the community. You can start with just a few swaps each day and build from there.”
These swaps may include swapping a big plate for a small plate, portion control; swapping often for sometimes, snacks; swapping sitting for moving; and swapping watching for playing.
To start out, you might just aim to make one swap during each part of the day and then slowly build from there. The idea is once you begin, you will find it is easier to swap and not stop certain lifestyle changes.
“You may think it is rude not to accept food if it is offered to you,” said Andonopoulos. “So why not try using a smaller plate or eat your meal slowly to give your stomach time to signal it is full. And don’t forget to choose more of the healthy options such as salad or vegetables. Once you begin, you’ll find it’s easier than you think,” she said.
Healthy eating and getting active can help you lose centimetres and prevent or delay the onset of chronic diseases such as some cancers, type 2 diabetes and heart disease. There are some simple everyday changes you can make to get you on your way to a healthier lifestyle without losing all the things you love.”
Losing weight doesn’t have to be hard. Health professionals and community organisations can play an important role in helping people make these small changes when they are in the supermarket, the kitchen or when playing with the kids, which can all make a real difference.”
