Libraries in the City of Monash will celebrate International Literacy Day by sharing a whole host of events and fun activities for all ages and interests on Thursday 8 September.

Monash Mayor Greg Male recognises that public libraries are an integral part of the City of Monash.

“In the last financial year, our libraries issued 2,058,066 loans to more than 1,063,413 visitors, which, any way you look at it, is a phenomenal number of people coming through the doors,” Cr Male said.

“This just goes to show that our libraries are a valued community asset and our librarians are committed to helping everyone who comes through the doors find the right book or perhaps suggest an event they might like to attend.”

The day aims to highlight the annual contribution libraries make to the community with over 1550 literacy, cultural and educational activities held throughout a year alone.

September will be a busy month for Monash libraries with entries in the 15th annual Short Story Competition to be short listed and winners selected by the expert judging panel.

Crime writing will also be featured during September. Renowned Underbelly author and journalist Andrew Rule will speak at Mount Waverley Library on Tuesday 6 September as part of the Body in the Library series. Other crime writers will also speak, including Sisters in Crime authors, P D Martin and Angela Savage.
