Australian Sam Stosur has defeated American Serena Williams in the US Open final to win the history making match 6-2, 6-3.
This win has made the history books twice for Stosur. Not only is this title her first ever grand slam win but she is the first Australian woman to take out the US Open title.
And what a opponent to beat. Williams is one of the most feared and fierce female tennis players on the circuit, and having the homegrown US advantage only spurred her on even more. But Stosur was showing no signs of weakness as she cruised through the first set. During the second, Stosur sat back and watched Williams’ well-known temper boil over and took out the second set and the match 6-3.
Australia has not had a female grand slam finalist since Evonne Goolagong-Cawley won the Wimbledon title in the 1980.
