The trial over a fatal bikie brawl at Sydney Airport has come to a standstill as the jury retires to consider their verdict.
Seven men stood trial over a fight in 2009 that caused the death of Hells Angels associate Anthony Zervas, who received multiple stab wounds and blows to the head. The public melee broke out after threats were exchanged mid-flight between members of rivaling gangs Hells Angels and Comancheros. Both gangs broke into a fight in the arrivals hall after calling for backup on the ground.
Six of the accused are members of Comancheros and stand accused of murder, while the seventh accused stood trial for riot and affray. Over a four-moth trial, the court heard evidence from airport staff and passengers who witnessed the incident. Justice Robert Hulme summed up the Crown and defence cases last month and directed jurors to assess all evidence and cases presented and come up with a unanimous verdict.
The New South Wales Government has considered legislation to outlaw clubs as a result of gang-related incidents including this one.
