Victorian number plates carrying road safety messages will be rolled out in Victoria next year, Premier Ted Baillieu announced on Sunday. The Victorian government believes that if the road safety message is on number plates, it will reinforce the safety message to all road users on a continual basis.

“The new number places will effectively mean hundreds of thousands of reminders to drive safely on our roads every day,” said Mr Baillieu.

In a bid to keep the road safety message at the front of everyone’s mind, the state government is asking Victorians across the state for suggestions on how the government can improve road safety and reinforce the message.

“We want to hear from Victorians across the stage – drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, children – this is an issue that affects us all,” said Mr Baillieu. The government wants all Victorians to submit their ideas to www.premier.vic.gov.au

The announcement follows the premier launching the regionally-targeted campaign Talk the Toll Down, an initiative to decrease the number of deaths in the road toll by communication and raising awareness.

“We’ve lost 218 lives on our roads already this year,” said Mr Baillieu. “That’s many grieving families, friends and colleagues. And that road toll doesn’t take into account thousands of people who have been seriously injured on our roads so far in 2011.”
