A number of people with up to 15 million euros in deposits have also been abusing OAED by claiming unemployment benefits, according to data collected by the Finance Ministry’s IT Department. The data has been sent to parliament to be investigated.

A senior OAED official told Kathimerini that the granting of benefits wasn’t related to income criteria rather it was for people who had gathered a specific number of social security credits and had lost their jobs.

As it stands, there are around 700,000 listed as jobless in Greece with only 200,000 receiving financial benefits from OAED.

An inspection by IKA, Greece’s largest social security fund, has found seven per cent of benefits are being claimed by people ineligible for assistance, or by people who have submitted counterfeit documents.
