Greek Superleague champions Olympiakos Pireaus are reportedly ready to make a bid for Glasgow Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor. Reports in the Scottish press have indicated that the Scottish international is one of two options that the Piraeus-based giants are considering for their No. 1 slot.
Olympiakos coach Ernesto Valverde is currently weighing up his targets but has been hugely impressed by McGregor and his consistency for club and country. The Greeks are also confident that they could make full use of Rangers’ current financial situation to land McGregor on the cheap.
The 29-year-old signed a new long-term contract in the summer but Ibrox owner Craig Whyte is now looking to sell some of their top stars to raise some much-needed revenue. Rangers boss Ally McCoist would be reluctant to lose his keeper but knows the final decision would be out of his hands and he would still have a more than capable deputy in Neil Alexander.
Olympiakos might not be McGregor’s first-choice but the lure of Champions League football and double his current £20,000 ($A31,000)-a-week salary could go some way to persuading him. McGregor’s preference would be to move to the English Premier League but so far nothing has come to fruition on that front.
