For more than 80 years, George Street in Thebarton has been a cultural reference for Greeks in SA, so to celebrate this, the Greek Orthodox Community of South Australia (GOCSA) are taking the party to the street with a Greek festival next weekend.

“The community’s aim is to offer its members and the general public a taste of Greek culture , food and entertainment. We thought a street festival would appeal to a wider group of people whether they are Greek or non-Greek,” Sylvia Cassoudakis, General Secretary, GOCSA, told Neos Kosmos.

A first of its kind for the Greek Orthodox Community, the George Street Greek Festival features a series of happenings and performances for all ages and all tastes, turning the busy strip into a true Greek panigyri that aims to attract Greeks and non-Greeks alike.

George Kapiniaris will be there all day Sunday as the MCing, entertaining all. Live band Kosmos with singer Stathis Papastergos will provide two days of the best Greek music, playing the hottest hits and the classics. The weekend will be filled with dancing, not only Greek but Highland, Chinese and Aboriginal.

There will be a variety of food stalls offering Greek savoury and sweet delights as well as activities for the kids such as face painting and balloons.

The George Street Greek Festival will be held on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 December at George Street Thebarton. Admission is free.
