A failed escape attempt by five inmates at Athens’s maximum security prison, Korydallos – which resulted in several guards being held hostage – ended Monday night.

Convicted kidnapper Panayiotis Vlastos and four suspected members of the Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire urban guerrilla group, set free the guards shortly before midnight. The members of the group were identified as Damiano Bolano, Christos Tsakalos and the Nikolopoulos brothers.

After they set the guards free, the inmates then handed over a gun and three knives alongside a letter protesting the conditions of the prison.

Visitors to the prison that day were trapped in the hostage but were all released unharmed.

An investigation is under way as to how the inmates were in possession of a gun.
