A sweep by the Financial Crimes Squad SDOE of 32 businesses, such as real estate offices, hotels, construction companies, advertising agencies, law firms and doctors offices, discovered more than 100 million euros in undeclared taxes, the Finance Ministry announced this week.
The audit of the 32 businesses found them to be in debt to the Greek state for amounts in excess of 150,000 on average, which means that unless they arrange a settlement soon, the owners of the businesses will be arrested.
Meanwhile, a businessman in Halkidiki in northern Greece was arrested for a second time on Tuesday for owing money to the state.
The 41-year-old, who presents himself as the owner of a number of different businesses, was first arrested last Thursday for owing 395,317 euros in unpaid taxes from his profession as a diver, while the Financial Crimes Squad tracked him down again on Tuesday for owing 1,297, 356 euros through a stationary store that is in his name.
