A total fire ban has been declared in Victoria due to extreme fire conditions caused by the heatwave this week.
The Country Fire Authority (CFA) has said that conditions will become tinder dry due to the hot northerly winds.
Extreme fire danger warnings have been issued for the southwestern Victoria whish will see temperatures hit 43 today, while the rest of the state has received severe fire warnings or high to very high.
Dennis Ward, state duty officer for the Department for Sustainability and the Environment (DSE) has asked all Victorian’s travelling over the Christmas / New Year period to remain alert.
“We are asking all Victorians to be aware of the safety issues and include any holidays or travel in their bushfire survival plans,” Mr Ward said.
“This means planning ahead, checking on conditions, tuning in to the emergency broadcasters and seeking out information before visiting.”
