Church leaders and followers of the Greek Orthodox faith packed St Efstathios Church in South Melbourne on Monday night, for the annual cutting and presenting of the vasilopita.
Bill Papastergiadis, president, Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria, who was present at St Efstathios, says the celebration of the vasilopita is one of the more “beautiful traditions of the Greek faith and the Greek church”.
“It’s an opportunity for everyone to get together to celebrate the beginning of the year, it’s a symbol of hope for all of us, and health and happiness,” Papastergiadis told Neos Kosmos. “I had the opportunity to reconnect with a lot of community leaders – the Archbishop of Romania was there as well and he only speaks Greek and a little English so it was nice event.”
