Automobile sales fell by 31.3 per cent in 2011, with cars posting a 30 per cent decline, according to figures released by the independent Hellenic Statistical Authority (Elstat).
The sharp decline in 2011 was posted despite a 27.4 per cent overall increase in automotive vehicle sales in December, resulting from the withdrawal of older cars and attractive offers by dealers.
he increase in car sales alone was 45.6 per cent in December. According to Elstat, a total of 126,372 vehicles (new and second-hand from abroad) were registered in Greece for the first time in the period January to December 2011, marking a 31.3 per cent decline for the corresponding period in 2010. The decline in January-December 2010 against the corresponding period in 2009 was 35.1 per cent. Motorcycle registrations in the January-December 2011 period declined by 22.7 per cent, falling to 47,754 from 61,763 in 2010. The decline in January to December 2010 against the corresponding period in 2009 was 15.5 per cent.
