PAOK Thessalonikis have defeated AEK Athens 2-0 to knock the defending Cup Winners out of the tournament. A controversial penalty, scored by Lino in the first half, set PAOK up for the win.
Stefanos Athanasiadis added another in the second half to help PAOK beat AEK 2-0 at Thessaloniki on Wednesday and avenge its semifinal defeat last season.
Following the game AEK issued a strong-worded statement against the referee, Thanasis Yachos, and the head of the Central Refereeing Committee, Kyros Vassaras.
On Tuesday Panserraikos upset host Xanthi to win 2-1 and continue the club’s tradition of giant killing. Marcelinho gave the Super League highfliers the lead after 25 minutes, but Filipe da Costa turned the game on its head for recently relegated Panserraikos with his goals on either side of halftime to earn the Serres team the victory.
OFI defeated Panetolikos 3-1 at Agrinio on Thursday in a game that saw the two sides end up with ten men apiece. Andre Rocha gave Panetolikos the lead, but before halftime Mirnes Sisic equalized for OFI, which in the second half won its ticket to the last eight through goals by Christos Bourbos and Vangelis Mantzios.
The draw for the knockout quarterfinals has decided that PAOK will face Atromitos and Olympiakos will host Panionios, both games scheduled for January 25, while OFI will entertain Panserraikos and Asteras Tripolis will clash with Kerkyra on February 22.
