The major issue of taxation of Greeks abroad, and the impact of the new tax law for the diaspora, were the focus of the meeting of SAE World Secretary Dr Olga Sarantopoulos with Greek Deputy Finance Minister, Mr Pantelis Economou.
In her note dated 18 October 2011, addressed to Minister of Finance Mr Evangelos Venizelos, she formulated several requests of the diaspora on the most important issue of taxation for the Greeks abroad, referring to the advisory and supportive role of SAE. At a meeting held in the Ministry of Finance this week, in presence also of the advisors to the Deputy Minister, Mr K Karberi and Mr D Economou, the issues raised in the past by Dr Sarantopoulos were discussed and the possibility of more favourable tax arrangements for expatriates were considered.
The SAE Secretary raised the issue of equal tax treatment of overseas Greeks and fair treatment by the national centre, highlighting the timeless offer to their homeland. At the meeting, the prospect of creating a genuine communication channel with the expatriates was discussed, as well as the possibility of closer cooperation with the Ministry of Finance in the exchange of expertise.
Dr Sarantopoulos stated that it is essential that expatriates receive favourable treatment by the Greek state. She noted that the efficient and proper use on the enormous potential of the diaspora, will have multiple benefits for the future of Greece. Finally, it was decided to have further consultation before the enactment of the new tax law which is promoted by the Greek government.
