Catholic Health Australia has warned that new legislation proposed by the Federal Goverment will allow the government to take over charities critical of government policy.

The proposed creation of Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Commission would ultimately allow the government to “shame” critics withouth disclosing the claims of what they are doing wrong. The biggest not-for-profit health provider has further accussed the Gillard Government on releasing draft legislation for comment over Christmas time in an attempt to disallow the charities from understanding the full implications of its proposals.

The debate for more transparency measures for tax-exempt not-for-profit organisations and charities has been going on for years and the government said they have released this Bill in order to create a body to oversee the integrity of the arrangements in this sector.
