Over 440 Australians received awards as part of the Australia day festivities. Among the large number of Australians on the list, eight notable Greek Australians have been recognised for their contribution to Australian society and have been awarded high honours as part of Thursday’s Australia Day Awards ceremony.
Those included in the Australian Day Honours were: Christopher Xenephon Stathy, for service to the water industry in South Australia; Jack George Kyros, deceased, for service to the Greek community of Western Australia; Helen Kalis, for service to the community in Tasmania; Loula Kostos, for service to the Royal Children’s Hospital as a volunteer; Peter James Prineas, for service to conservation and the environment in New South Wales through executive and advocacy roles; Helen Poulos for service to children in hospital and to their families; Lydia Lassila, for service to sport as a Gold Medallist at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games; and Emanuel Andrew Petrelis, for service to the Greek community of Western Australia, to business, and to education.
The Australia Day Honours List is a public recognition of people who provide outstanding community service, and whose achievements enhance national identity, Australians who demonstrate the qualities of positive role models who are not only worthy of respect but encourage ambition.
