With speculation mounting that Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd will challenge the Australian Prime Minister for leadership, the PM Julia Gillard says she has the support of her Labor colleagues. The belief is that the challenge would happen as soon as next week.
Ms Gillard maintains that while this is going on, she is keeping up her efforts in her role.
“I’m getting on with the job with the strong support of my caucus colleagues,” she said. “I’m getting on with my job. Kevin Rudd’s getting on with his.”
Ms Gillard today, dodges questions relating to whether or nto she would discipline Mr Rudd or sack him for disloyalty. She also avoided answering the question on whether or not she wold hold a caucus vote to test her support from her colleagues.
Opposition Leader Tony Abbott today said an election was needed to get a government that would focus on the job at hand.
“What we need is a government that is getting on with the job, not a government that is cannibalising itself,” Mr Abbott said. “What we need are changes of policy, not just changes of leadership, and I think the Australian people are increasingly sick of this soap opera inside the Labor party.”
