The kids space returns at the Antipodes Festival sponsored by Della Rosa, and don’t worry if you missed out on getting your face painted last year: an extra face painter has been employed for festivities in 2012. As ever, all the entertainment is free, an even greater incentive for families to attend, particularly those with a lot of kids.
The Della Rosa Kids Space is comprised of two elements – a stage where families can sit and enjoy performances, and an arts marquee providing fun crafts activities for the children. It is a unique area designed to sustain children’s interest and make them feel part of the festival. It is also rewarding for parents, knowing their children are involved in culturally enriching activities that recognise Greek heritage.
The stage will host dance groups from across Melbourne, representing the different regional styles of Greece. In addition, organisers have introduced Greek dancing lessons. Returning to the stage in 2012 is the popular story telling entertainment. Della Rosa Kids Space co-ordinator Amanda Hatzilepos, explains, “It was a big hit last year.
The children can sit on the stage with the story teller and hear a traditional Greek fairy tale in both Greek and English.” In the arts marquee there will be mask and kite making, continuing the carnivàle theme and atmosphere of the festival. Children can create their own one-of-a-kind mask then be involved in the colourful parade. During the parade prizes will be awarded for the best masks.
Regardless of the result, kids still get to take their masks home with them. Ms Hatzilepos believes a dedicated children’s area provides greater attraction and value for families. “The adults come and watch the international acts and the carnivàle rides … the Della Rosa Kids Space offers something more cultural and interesting for the kids, to make them want to stay and come back the next year.” Organisers are always striving to make the Antipodes Festival that “little bit better with more activities and variety on the stage.” Children are made to feel welcomed by the Melbourne’s Greek Community though initiatives like the Della Rosa Kids Space. So come on parents, bring your kids along and experience something new and different.
