A South Australian Government commissioned report evaluating Holden’s contribution to the local economy has found that up to 16,000 jobs would be lost overall if Holden were to shut its northern Adelaide plant at Elizabeth.
The report was tabled by the Premier in State Parliament, painting a grim outlook for South Australia with estimates of losses between 6,000 and 16,000 jobs in the state reducing economic activity by between $0.5 billion to $1.5 billion and a decline in state revenue of between $25 million to $83 million. Holden is negotiating to get more money from both the SA and Federal Governments to support its operations in a co-investment from the Government to continue car making in South Australia.
Following consideration by Government, the proposal will be sent on to be ratified by the board of General Motors in the US where further negotiations may take place, but the overall feeling is both the South Australian and Federal Governments will do anything to keep Holdens’ Adelaide plant going.
