Singer Dimitris Mitropanos has passed away aged 64, after suffering pulmonary edema caused by a heart attack.
The singer was one of the most recognised voices of Greece and was known for his revival of the live music scene.
His career, that spanned over 40 years, began in 1964 after moving to Athens from Trikala, Thessaly – where he was born.
Mitropanos was known for his smooth delivery, mild manner and was considered as one of the foremost forces of bringing back rembetika in Greece. He sang traditional laika tracks, and his music is still heard and performed by various artists all over the world.
In his time, he worked with Greece’s most respected composers such as Mikis Theodorakis and Giorgos Zabetas.
