Hundreds of legal and medical minds are expected to converge upon Cape Sounion in Greece next year to discuss the theme ‘Medicine and the Law – Protecting the Unprotected?’
This conference series, which has been running since 1985, was developed by lawyers and doctors who were interested in both disciplines and the fact that they have their basis in Greek history.
Every two years the ‘not for profit’ conference is held in a different location in Greece, and much of the money raised is donated to charity.
Before each conference, two travelling fellowships are given to early career lawyers and doctors, to allow them to attend the conference and establish contacts with other professionals in their field from around the world.
The Professor Anastasios Dontas Fellowship is named after one of Greece’s most recognised medical professionals who has been working as an academic and clinical physician in Greece and the US for over fifty years. He founded Athens’ Centre for Studies of Age Related Change and serves as its Director, and is the official Conference Patron in Greece.
The travelling fellowship offered to legal professionals is named after former Chief Justice for Victoria and Provost of the Sir Zelman Cowan Centre at Victoria University, Professor John Harber Phillips AC. This fellowship honours his service to both the conference and his dedication to the Law and Greek Australian relations until his death in 2009.
This year the keynote speakers will be High Court of Australia Justice J Dyson Heydon AC and 2011 Australian of the Year Mr Simon McKeon, who serves as Executive Chairman of Macquarie Group’s Melbourne office, Chairman of CSIRO, Business for Millenium Development and a Federal Government Panel carrying out a Strategic Review of Health and Medical Research.
The biennial 14th Greek Australian International Legal and Medical Conference will be held in 2013 at Cape Sounion, Greece from 2-8 June.
