US State Representatives Carolyn Maloney and Gus Bilirakis recently introduced a resolution that urges the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) to work within regulations and framework of the United Nations process with Greece to speed up the process of achieving the longstanding name dispute.
The state representatives also urged the United States government to work with NATO to reach policy goals with regards to the enlargement issue. Maloney stated the resolution “sends an important signal that the United States strongly supports a solution to the name issue and continues to encourage (FYROM capital) Skopje and Athens to reach a mutually acceptable solution as soon as possible.
“To uphold the integrity of the alliance, long-held NATO rulings and agreements should be honoured and should not be allowed to be circumvented,” Bilirakis added.
