Greek swimmer Spyros Gianniotis was in tears after just missing out on an Olympic medal in the 10-kilometer open water swimming event in London’s Hyde Park yesterday.
Gianniotis came fourth, 10 seconds behind the winner, Tunisia’s Oussama Mellouli. Germany’s Thomas Lurz won the silver and Canada’s Richard Weinberger took the bronze.
‘So near yet so far,’ Gianniotis, the reigning world champion, said. “That’s sport. I’m really feeling it at the moment,” he added before breaking down.
The women’s rhythmic gymnastics team missed out on a place in the final round after coming ninth. The top eight qualified.
