Teachers, public-sector doctors and soldiers took to the streets in protest at the wage cuts proposed in the government’s new austerity package.
Post office workers in Attica will also strike, while the civil servants federation ADEDY, secondary teachers union OLME and primary teachers union DOE held a strike rally outside Athens University in central Athens.
Main opposition Syriza said that some of its MPs will attend the protest.
Current and former members of the armed forces will hold a protest at Kolokotronis Square (outside the Old Parliament on Stadiou St).
In Piraeus, pharmacies are closed in protest at the health ministry. Elsewhere, pharmacists are not dispensing medicines on credit to people insured with the national healthcare provider EOPYY.
Municipal employees started a two-day nationwide strike in protest at the reduction in local government funding.
