Postecoglou said no one was guaranteed a starting spot for the A-League Round 1 derby against Melbourne Heart at Etihad Stadium on October 5. “I want to play really good, exciting football and make sure our club, which has the most members and biggest support, has been embraced as a team that’s exciting to watch,” he said. “That’s my goal and hopefully it takes us a long way in the title race. “I’m nowhere closer (to a preferred starting side) than when we started because I don’t want to be. “I’ve told the players all along I want 22 fit players ready for that first game. “Over the next few weeks we’ll try a few things. The key is that more players understand what we need, and when we get to the first game I’ll look at who’s most comfortable within our structure.” Postecoglou lauded Sydney FC for the capture of Italy superstar Alessandro Del Piero. Victory will face the Juventus legend in Round 6 at the Sydney Football Stadium. “Absolutely fantastic. If there was an off-season ladder, they’ve won the championship,” Postecoglou said. “It astounds me that people still look for negatives. There couldn’t be a better signing. “He’s a class act on and, more importantly, off the field. “I think sometimes we get it wrong. We go for people who can maybe produce on the field, but off the field they aren’t prepared to embrace our football and our country and our culture.”
