The Hellenic Writers Association of Australia celebrated their 20 year anniversary last week. The function was a remembrance of events and successes of the past and an important milestone in the history of the Association. The event took place at the Pontian Community building in Brunswick and present were the President of the Pontian Community Spiros Korossidis, the President of HWAA Thymios Haralambopoulos, the Consul General of Greece Eleni Lianidou and past presidents and representatives. The crowd enjoyed recitals by members and salutations by those who mattered most. There was also a live music performance by Iakovos Papadopoulos (bouzouki) and composer Spiros Papoutsis (synthesizer). HWAA publishes the periodical O Logos (The Word) annually and this year marks its 25th edition. All speakers mentioned the important contribution by Joanna Liakakos, as well as founding member Alekos Aggelidis (first president), who sadly passed away in 1995. In its twenty years, about 180 books were launched by writers of the diaspora and many more other functions have been organised. A number of firsts were also mentioned including the first bilingual Literary website in the world of Hellenes abroad in 1996 by HWAA, the first book exhibition of books by Greek-Australians in 1994 at the Greek-Orthodox College Sts Anargyroi in Oakleigh, the first catalogue of writers in Australia published in periodical O Logos and the first photographic exhibition of writers in Melbourne organised in conjunction with RMIT University Greek Archives and Costas Athanasiou the photographer.
