Melbourne Victory has a novel strategy for becoming the most attacking team in the A-League – play without a striker. Victory rounded out its pre-season with a 2-1 loss on Wednesday to Perth Glory at AAMI Park, with only one final intra-club game before the Round 1 derby at Etihad Stadium. Coach Ange Postecoglou persisted with the unorthodox system similar to the one Barcelona and Spain have recently employed, with Argentine midfielder Marcos Flores playing as a quasi striker. Despite the loss, Postecoglou said he was happy with the progress of his players. “We want to be a fairly attacking team and we’re setting up the team that way,” he said yesterday. “We’ve got some really good attacking players who can beat players with a pass or a dribble and take the game to the opposition. “The players are starting to get an understanding of what we want … and, with some fine-tuning, we’ll be ready.”
