Adelaide:
This year marks the 34th Dimitria Greek Festival in Adelaide to be held for the first time in history at Flinders University. The official opening for 2012 will also hold the launch of the LOGOS program, for the study of Modern Greek at Flinders University and the unveiling of a bronze statue of a prominent ancient Greek philosopher donated by the Halkidikeon society in Greece.
The statue will be unveiled by the Premier of South Australia, the Hon, Jay Wetherill MP and the event will be attended by many local and dignitaries and the Greek and local community.
The Halkidikeon society of South Australia has provided generous financial support to assist in bringing the meter high bronze statue from Greece as a donation to the Flinders University.
The statue will take place in the centre of Flinders University’s main plaza area. A ceremony, planned to coincide with the Dimitria Festival will see the statue formally placed on its pedestal.
LOGOS Australian centre for Hellenic language and Culture is a newly established centre for the training and promotion of Greek language teaching at Flinders University.
The purpose of the centre is to preserve and promote the Greek language and culture in Australia by strengthening connections between people of Australia and Greece, inspiring younger generations to excel and to support the Australian Greek communities to grow.
The Dimitria festival celebrations will include Greek band, dance groups, school art displays, and cup presentation to the winning team of the “Dimitria” soccer completion, plenty of food and drink stalls, traditional Macedonian pittes and many Greek sweets.
A traditional Greek celebration for families, relatives and friends and as always free entry – enjoy a taste of Greece.
