An annual financial boost of $50,000 for a festival in Oakleigh will see the Greek hub engage in a festival celebration in honour of the Greek National Day, 25 March, every year following campaigning by Greek Australian councillor Stephen Dimopoulos.

Dimipoulos has been campaigning for a $4 million upgrade to the Oakleigh Shopping Precinct, including works in Eaton Mall, Atherton Road and Station Street.

Cr Dimipoulos will deliver $50,000 to for the festival to occur every year on March 25, but also create a periptero – a newspaper and drink stand iconic to the streets of Greece – in the heart of Eaton Mall.

He feels that the establishment of a periptero will enhance the area’s Greek cultural heart. The Greek National Day festival will also have an education element to explain to the general public the significance of March 25.
