Football Federation Victoria (FFV) is undertaking an investigation into the crowd behaviour at last Sunday’s VPL Grand Final at AAMI Park between Oakleigh Cannons and Dandenong Thunder.

The match, which Dandenong won 2-1, saw flares and rockets launched after both Dandenong goals from a large section of their supporters positioned behind the goal. One rocket deflected off a second tier signage board and hit two spectators.

Neither spectator suffered serious injury but were both shocked by the experience. FFV CEO Mark Rendell says his organisation takes incidents such as this very seriously.

“What is disappointing is that this incident has taken the gloss off what was otherwise a highly successful day for football in Victoria,” he said.

“FFV will work closely with Victoria Police and venue management to identify the people responsible. I have spoken with Dandenong officials and asked for help in naming the people involved.

“FFV has zero tolerance for this type of behaviour as we believe everyone involved in the game, be they players, referees, coaches or spectators have the right to feel safe at a ground. Once we have gathered all relevant material this matter will go to the FFV’s Independent Tribunal for resolution.”
