The Greek Film Festival pays tribute to one of the leading filmmakers of his generation Theo Angelopoulos, who tragically lost his life earlier in the year whilst working on the closing chapter of his latest trilogy. Showing Landscape in the Mist (1988) today, the screening will be followed by a Q & A session led by Associate Professor Vrasidas Karalis of the Modern Greek Department, University of Sydney.
Considered one of the most influential and widely respected filmmakers in the world, this acclaimed and multi award winning director dominated the Greek film industry since 1975. Angelopoulos, defined by Martin Scorsese as “a masterful filmmaker”, developed a unique cinematic vision, characterized by slight variations in movement, subtle changes in distance, long takes, and complicated but carefully composed scenes, offering a hypnotic, sweeping, and profoundly emotional cinema.
Landscape in the Mist, the first of his films to feature children, follow a 14-year-old girl and her little brother as they embark on a journey to find their father, whom they believe to be in Germany. In fact, it is an existential odyssey, a voyage towards the unattainable. Greece’s 1988 Academy Awards Foreign Film Section entry, it received the Silver Lion Award for Best Director at the 1988 Venice Film Festival, the 1989 European Film Award for Best Film and the Silver Plaque for Best Cinematography at the Chicago Film Festival.
This unique screening of Landscape in the Mist provides a rare opportunity to see a classic film on the big screen. With one cinema sold out, the second cinema is selling fast. There will be no additional screenings, so only a limited few will be a part of this exceptional cinematic experience. For more information and tickets visit www.greekfilmfestival.com.au
