The Greek Cultural Precinct Story Pillar – a new landmark to tell stories of Melbourne’s bustling Greek Cultural Precinct on Lonsdale Street – was officially launched by Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship Nicholas Kotsiras.
The Pillar will provide a fascinating window into the history of how the precinct evolved and allow visitors to gain insight into the characters who contributed to the development of the area.
Mr Kotsiras said the Greek Cultural Precinct is one of Melbourne’s most iconic areas and a living example of how migration shaped Victoria.
“Lonsdale Street has been the spiritual heart of Victoria’s Greek community for decades. The restaurants, cafes and music stores that line the precinct created a home away from home for many Greek migrants, many of whom came to Melbourne after World War II,” Mr Kotsiras said.
The Story Pillar is the final project of the Cultural Precinct Enhancement Fund – a $10 million initiative of the Victorian Government, in partnership with the City of Melbourne and the Chinese, Italian and Greek communities, to preserve the character of Melbourne’s well-established and popular cultural precincts.
