UN envoy Matthew Nimetz will pay a visit to Athens and Skopje in the coming weeks, and the issue of the naming of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia
(FYROM) will be a hot agenda item. Nimetz will present proposals to both Athens and Skopje about the name, but the proposals will include a geographic descriptor, without going into issues of identity and language. FYROM organisations around the globe – including Australia – have circulated a written statement opposing strenuously the adoption of a composite name containing the term ‘Macedonia’. According to sources, the proposed name is not expected to
be very different from the one Nimetz put forward in July 2009, which was “Republic of North Macedonia.”
