A lightning bolt has destroyed Australian stonemason Tom Finlay’s tribute to an iconic Greek sculpture.
The hand-carved sculpture – based on Alexandros’ ancient Greek statue Venus de Milo – was destroyed when it was struck by lightning leaving only the statue’s breasts intact.
The 48-year-old was standing just yards from his sculpture – made with locally sourced porcenalite – when it was scattered everywhere in the yard of his business near Yarrawonga in remote Northern Territory.
“There was a clap of thunder and the sculpture blew up like a rocket-launcher had hit it,” Mr Finlay told NT News, adding “the lightning looked like a serpent”.
