Sydney FC is still scratching their heads, with the amazing and unprecedented win over Wellingon Phoenix on the weekend.
A whopping, 7-1 win to the languishing team was extraordinary, with its star power, Alessandro Del Piero scoring four out of the seven goals.
The Italian soccer great produced one of the finest individual performances in Hyundai A-League history, helping to secure the Sky Blues their biggest win ever, and propel them finally up the ladder.
“I felt free in my mind today for sure, better than the other days,” Del Piero said of his sublime performance to the FFA.
“For sure it was a good day from the heavens. When you score four it’s a good moment.
“I’m very happy not only for the four goals but because we played very good from first minute and we won a great game.”
The embarrassing loss from Phoenix was in part due to Sydney’s cohesive performance, showcasing some of their best passing in a match and keeping up their speed.
Asked the catalyst for the side’s turnaround in form, Del Piero said: “The last game (come-from-behind 2-1 win over Melbourne Heart) maybe something changed in our mind.
“When we are down 1-0 and we switched the game in the last few minutes it probably put some more energy in our minds and legs.
“We played with focus today, more focus than other games and I hope it’s another step forward for our season.”
Coach Frank Farina is certainly seeing a new way forward with his team, and is desperate to keep the momentum going.
He believes the huge win was a just reward for their hard work and fight over the last few weeks but understands it’s easy for the team to beat a team last on the ladder. The real test will come during the Sky Blue’s next match against number three, Melbourne
Victory.
“Let’s be realistic, it’s just three points,” Farina said.
“Next week we go to Melbourne (Victory) so unless we continue to play like that, fight and work hard it means nothing.”
