A milestone celebration for Gerassimos Metaxas who along with close family and his wife Afrodety (95), rejoiced at his 100th birthday. He was thrilled to receive letters from Queen Elizabeth II, Julia Gillard, Quentin Bryce, and Simon Crean as well as the many best wishes and congratulatory messages from family and friends. Married for 76 years, the couple had two children (both deceased) and have five grand-children and four great grand-children. Gerassimos came to Australia from Ithaca as a young man in 1937 and served as a cook in the Australian army during World War II.
