Melbourne has finally scored its big game and will be hosting Premier League football club Liverpool in July.
It comes as Sydney nabbed Manchester United game this year, and left Melbourne out of the loop.
Liverpool will verse A-league stars, Melbourne Victory in a match at the MCG on July 25, and with an already strong following from the Victory fans, the MCG will be at capacity.
Liverpool officials came and scouted Victory as potential opponents last month and were impressed by the sell-out crowd and the atmosphere at the Victory-Sydney match at AAMI Park on Australia Day. The fact that it also pulled more than 40,000 at Etihad Stadium against Heart the following week will not have gone unnoticed at Anfield.
The game will be part of Liverpool’s pre-season preparations for the 2013-14 Premiership campaign that will kick off a few weeks later.
