The Brisbane Roar have failed to qualify for the Asian Champions League group stage after going out on penalties to Thai side Buriram United on this week.
The Roar was on the back foot for much of the match at Thunder Castle Stadium and did well to hang on 120 minutes without conceding, but went on to collapse in a 3-0 penalty shoot-out loss.
The usually reliable Thomas Broich and Besart Berisha both had penalties saved as the visitors failed to score a single spot kick.
Goalkeeper Michael Theo has been the hero for the Roar in regulation time, pulling off a string of clutch saves – particularly in the first half when the energetic home side relentlessly pressured Brisbane.
The Roar worked their way into the match in the second half and had the better of the late chances as Luke Brattan, Stef Nijland and Ben Halloran impressed.
