As the political landscape and national demographic changes in Australia, ethnic media will have a much bigger role says former immigration minister Chris Bowen.
Mr Bowen, who now holds the tertiary education portfolio, told a seminar in Sydney this week the role of multicultural media in Australia should not be underestimated.
“Ethnic media is a mechanism for talking to and talking with very important communities in Australia,” he told the conference at UTS.
Mr Bowen said the multicultural nature of Australia means diverse voices were at the heart of democracy.
“Having a strong and vibrant media sector really says it’s OK to continue that culture … and that it’s OK to continue to have an interest in what’s happening in one’s homeland.”
