Mycenaean Greek society, sexuality in Ancient Greece and Greek colonies in southern Italy will be some of the topics covered in the GOCMV first term seminars.
Starting in late March and continuing through till May, the seminars address some of the most pertinent topics in Greek Australian society, while marking historical events with a new angle.
A special ANZAC Day commemorative lecture given by Perth-based Dr John Yiannakis will look at the marginalisation of the island of Lemnos in the discourse of Australia’s Gallipoli campaign.
While a special overview of Greece’s political sphere from 1974 to the present will be given by Thessaloniki-based freelance journalist Kostas Karamarkos.
The event launch on March 21 will be headed by Consul General for Greece in Melbourne, Eleni Lianidou and Professor Nikos Papastergiadis. The first lecture will be given by La Trobe University’s Professor Chris Mackie on Homer on March 28.
The second semester or mid-year seminars will cover themes pertaining to the Byzantine and Ottoman periods, while the final third term will focus on Modern Greece and its Diaspora.
