Prime Minister Antonis Samaras’ much-anticipated meeting with the troika concluded on Wednesday evening without the two sides reaching a final agreement.
Exiting the meeting, Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras told reporters that “a deal hasn’t been reached yet, but there has been significant progress in talks and the disbursement of the next loan tranche will not be an issue”.
Stournaras also said that the troika inspectors will leave the country on Thursday and the package will be finalised next week when the EU and IMF representatives return.
The talks got underway at 7pm on Wednesday at the Maximos Mansion.
The meeting between Samaras and the troika, which had been scheduled for Tuesday evening, was postponed after talks with ministers apparently stalled over tax collection difficulties and promised reductions in public sector staff.
Earlier, government officials and troika inspectors held a lengthy meeting that concluded at 6pm. Present in the meeting were Stournaras, Alternate Finance Minister Christos Staikouras, as well as the premier’s close advisors Chrysanthos Lazaridis and Stavros Papastavrou.
